Community oriented projects that JLRD has provided innovative design for include The Society of the Four Arts in Palm Beach, The City of Aventura Performing Arts Theater, and The College of Arts and Letters "Living Room Theaters" located at FAU's Boca Raton campus.
Special attention is required on projects such as these with regards to acoustics and sound vibrations. Individual space control must be taken into account to ensure occupancy comfort and lighting control of the different types of space uses. These facilities have large concentrated lighting heat loads and also have large open seating areas where high volumes of people move to and from, requiring proactive heating and cooling, and lighting system control and activation. Vibration from rotating equipment is of special concern, and prevention of noise generated from outside must be prevented from transmitting to interior occupied spaces. JLRD has successfully orchestrated the MEP design requirements as evidenced by LEED accreditation of several of these projects.
JLRD designed the HVAC systems to maintain close control of space temperature and humidity in
order to preserve the exhibits. In addition, lighting and associated controls were designed by JLRD to offer complimentary illumination of exhibits and flexibility in accommodating the ever-changing environment. The
various building systems are required to adapt to exhibit requirements as they rotate from one exhibit to the next. In addition to design, JLRD provided Construction Administration services during construction for this
extensive renovation.
In need of a landmark venue for intimate concerts, lectures, plays and performances, the City of Aventura selected PGAL and JLRD to execute
their vision of a new LEED Certified performing arts and cultural center. The traditional proscenium theatre includes a pre-function lobby, café, backstage support/dressing and administrative areas.
The HVAC system incorporates a unique under-floor displacement ventilation design approach which introduces dehumidified 65-degree
air under the seats, and keeps the lighting heat load assigned to the return air stream. This approach is not only more energy efficient, it provides for better acoustics, as the entire floor area serves as the supply duct
with ultralow velocities. The stage has dedicated temperature control to meet Screen Actors Guild requirements. A high-tech stage lighting, dimming and acoustical system ensures performances are presented in the manner they
were choreographed.
We had to think outside the box and be very creative with our design in order to 'hide' the new ducts and utilities in very small spaces, above
ceilings and behind walls. The new systems still require regular maintenance, so planning and locating these items to provide service access space required extensive field investigations and coordinated design.
The artist’s apartment has its own separate cooling and heating system and controls.
